How should I store my avocados?

Do not refrigerate your avocados, at least not initially. If they are placed in the fridge too early, they won't ripen completely. Once picked from the tree, avocados, much like bananas, produce ethylene, which triggers the ripening process. A cool, dark place is best for storage, with an ideal temperature of 20 degrees. If you need to ripen that avocado ASAP then place it in a brown paper bag with a banana or two. The bananas will release ethylene gas, a natural plant hormone that aids in ripening fruit. Is an avocado a fruit or a vegetable?

A fruit! While definitely not sweet, it falls firmly in the fruit-not the vegetable-family. That’s because the avocado tree is part of the flowering-plant family Lauraceae.

Can you tell me some fun facts about avocados?

You bet we can!

  • Half of an average-sized avocado has 4.6 grams of fiber — the most of any fruit!

  • Avocados have been known by many names over the years including ahuacatl by the Aztecs, aguacate by the Spanish conquistadors and “alligator pears” by Sir Hans Sloane. The word “avocado” apparently didn’t come to light until the Department of Agriculture in the US decided that “avocado” was much more appealing than “alligator pear.”

  • An avocado has more potassium than a banana. Honestly! Avocados have a whopping 975 milligrams of potassium, whereas a banana typically has 544 milligrams.

  • If you’re looking for a healthy immune system, eat an avocado. The National Cancer Institute found that an avocado has 19 milligrams of glutathione per ½ fruit! Glutathione functions as an antioxidant which helps your immune system function normally.
